| When you take into account all the individual items that we spent money on in the pursuit of gaining tuneability, and performance with the traditional Z32 steps, it works out to be the same if not slightly more expensive than a fully loaded standalone setup... ** I for 1 broke it down for myself as follows:
Average/approximate costs of electronic performance items, even on the conseravtive side ie: -Ebc's, (blitz id spec-r $620) -AFR gauges (Assuming you run only one) $220 -J&S Knock controllers $600 -Nistune or comparable software fully installed ready to go $700 -socketing a ecu $50 -trusted tuned chip from a good tuning vendor like SZ $100 -Selin translator $300 -Selin elbow/bracket kit $130 -SZ ecu MAP selector $360 **All this is just the basic crap we all have on most of our cars.... this all adds up to over $3,000, and I am sure I am forgetting other miscellaneous individual performance electronic items I could add... Where as a fully loaded standalone has ALL of the above + waaaay more options/features pre-built in, waiting to be configured...ie: launch control, traction control, NOS, water/meth injection controll, etc....thats 2-3k or more in additional capabilities that I didn't even add to my list of common individual gadgets that we add to our cars, thats already built into ONE standalone. With all this outlined, it's almost as if anyone looking to mod a Z from stock might as well go full standalone, and gain all these options in 1 unit upfront, Vs a long list of gadgets that all do the same damn thing essentially.... I don't have a standalone currently installed (not YET at least), but the math doesn't lie, even in my conservative estimations so far... I will be doing MAP2 or 3 to start personally, until the right breeze blows for me to want to part out all my individual performance electronic items, in favor of 1 solid unit. It simply makes sense from a total cost point of view in my mind. Granted not everyone wants to take on the perceived negative stereotype of standalones and driveability issues... But hey, your gonna end up spending the same amount or MORE, and STILL be stuck with a crap MAF restrictor plate system... The only other "cheap" way out is with a piggy back MAPecu2 or 3.. they can be had used in the $300-$500 range commonly on craigslist.. then all you add is some dirt cheap and commonly available GM sensors, and voila, your DONESKI!!! :) Let the easy tuning begin for more POWAH, hahaha
